   THE FIESTAS  
 

There are Fiestas of national tourist interest, known in the whole country for it´s showiness and singularity, which make them more attractive and different than other by reflecting an effort of representing historical facts of popular character. Other spectacles of the culture: the music, the cinema, the theatre, the dance, have there reflects in events consolidated to national levels.

 
   THE HOGUERAS OF SAN JUAN  
 

This is a festivity in honor to San Juan and it takes place at the end of June in many cities of the Costa Blanca. It consists of the construction of artistic monuments of wood and carton, which represent figures (as sculptures) and critiques whith prominent figures of social, political, economic, or cultural facts of the local zone and of the current actuality. These figures are created manually by the artists, the "foguerers".

 
 
 

The Hogueras de San Juan begin a few days before the day of the saint, and start with " The Plantà ", placing them on the streets of the cities. A juror values the quality of every hoguera and grants the prizes. Finally the day of " The Cremà " (July 24, day of San Juan) at twelve o'clock in the night they are burn´t one by one, beginning with the one that has obtained the last prize and finishing the hogueras with the heat of the fire that burns in the winning hoguera.

 
   THE MOROS Y CRISTIANOS  
 
 

It is a typical fiesta that is celebrated in many cities of the Costa Blanca. It does not have exact date, so in every city it is given at a different time. It consists of representing the long war between Mussulmans and Christians (the Reconquest) that lasted so many years. The neighbors of the cities gather in crowds for "filades", which dress of the epoch of the reconquest and realize parades.

 
   THE SEMANA SANTA (EASTER)  
 

This celebration, deeply religious is a tradition in whole Spain, and therefore also in the Costa Blanca. Really it is a celebration of all the Catholics, but in Spain it has a special character. It is the Holy Week of the Catholic religion, the week previous to Sunday of Resurrection.

 
 
 

The days of major relevancy are Thursday and Friday saints. There are sad feeling days, because they remember the death of Jesus Christ, but to the contiguous Sunday the sorrow is ended and the Easter of Resurrection comes with the fiesta and the gunpowder of the Valencian petards.

Throughout this week processions take through the streets of the cities, in which the Capuchins take part with there vestiment, music and corresponding steps.

 
   THE TOROS  
 

This festivity consists of releasing brave bulls along a few streets that are closed laterally untll the plaza of the village. This is the " encierro de toros ", in which the people run in front of the bulls until reaching the plaza or to a secure place where to see the bulls go by. When having reached the plaza the bulls will remain a while and the public, and especially the young men are used to friendly bullfight or make them just run.

 
 
 

This festivity is celebrated in every village in different dates, but normally in summer time. They realize a few festive activities in parallel (popular dances, concerts, exhibitions, popular meals...).

 
   MISTERIO DE ELCHE  
 
 

This festivity only takes place in the city of Elche and is the most cultural of all. The "Mystery" or " Fiesta de Elche " is a work of liturgical medieval theatre, which is represented, it´s vivacious and is celebrated every year, the 14th (the Vespra) and 15 (the festivity) of August inside the Basilica of Holy Maria of Elche. The "Mystery" or " fiesta of Elche " is composed by two acts (the vespra and the festa, the first and the second act).

 
     
     
     
 
 
 
 
ESPAŅOL
